Wayan Arsa

Practical advice

If you want to go to Bali there is actually only one way of transport: by air, as it is nearly on the other side of the globe. You can choose between two alternatives: A packed trip with one of the travel-agencies or buying a plain air-plane ticket including a stay on your own hand. We can warmly recommend the last possibility. With a packed trip you are transported to Bali and accommodated in one of the big tourist hotels either at the capital Denpasar or if you are lucky, in Ubud. In this way you do not feel alone, because in these areas nearly all the tourists of Bali are stowed together. Most of them are from Australia. Because Bali is to the Australians what Mallorca is to the Danes. It isn’t very far and it is cheap.

We were lucky to have a good friend, Bernhard, who has been in Bali very many times and therefore has very good knowledge about the local places. With his good help our trip was planned, and it took us around to most of the island with stops of two to three days in every place. All together five places. From here we went on our daily tours to exciting places. And furthermore Bernhard had a good friend in Bali, a native called Wayan Arsa, who is Balinese and helps and guides tourists around in Bali. He received us in the airport at our arrival, and he left us here again two weeks later. And in the meantime he took good care of us. The five overnight sleeping places and part of what we wanted to see was decided on before hand (before leaving Denmark), but without Wayan’s good advice and help very much really good experience would have been missed out. He took us out to small places on the island that the tourist agencies never would have shown their customers for sure. And on many nights he fetched us at the hotel or the lodge and took us out to a theatre- or dance-performance close by. And of course he made sure to take us home again afterwards.

When we go for a holiday abroad, we normally rent a car so that we can go around on our own. Luckily we left the transport in the hands of Wayan. The traffic in Bali is something special. They don’t drive very fast but they drive close, because there are extremely many scooters and small motorbikes - often with a family of four at the back – plus luggage. And then you drive in the left side of the road. And even after 2 weeks next to Wayan I was not able to see any traffic rules being observed. Obviously there are only two rules to observe in the traffic: driving in the left-hand-side (if possible) and not driving into each other. But actually we didn’t see a singe accident in the crowded roads during the two weeks. I enjoyed being driven around by Wayan even though I am a rather old and tough driver myselt. And it gives you the possibility to enjoy the view. And what a lot there is to see – and all along!!

If someone by chance has dropped into this web-site and now feels like wanting to visit this little paradise on earth – then we can warmly recommend you to do as we have done:

Read about the island on before hand. Take notes on what you find exciting. Buy a ticket strictly for the aeroplane in one of the travel-agencies. Finally contact Wayan Arsa to hear if he will arrange the practical things in the island. Wayan is an extremely sympathetic, friendly, and helpful fellow, who speaks a brilliant English. And he also has e-mail, so it is easy to get in touch with him (in English)
His address is yancung@hotmail.com and he lived close to Ubud, which is situated almost in the centre of the island.
